Thin public record

On October 8, 2026, a 1999 Pokémon Base Set 1st Edition Charizard graded PSA 10 closed on ALT at $1,385,274 after 46 bids, according to GempireCards and Vice. When the result was reported, payment had not yet been confirmed. If it settles, it is the highest price recorded for the card at that grade, about 152% above the $550,000 that Heritage achieved in December 2025, which was itself a record at the time.

Six months before the ALT sale, Heritage sold a CGC Gem Mint 10 copy of the same card for $81,250, according to PriceCharting's sales log. The card has the same printing, the same holo and the same first-edition stamp. Both slabs carry a 10, but the prices differ by a large multiple. As far as we can establish from the public record, no BGS 10 or BGS Black Label copy has changed hands in a verifiable recent sale.

This brief looks at how the three major grading labels price a single card at the top of the vintage Pokémon market. We do not revisit why the card is in demand. Our September analysis of the 30th-anniversary reissue covered how The Pokémon Company's reprint of Base Set Charizard coincided with strength in the original, and we take that demand as given. The question here is how the demand is split across slabs, and what that split says about provenance, population, venue and the structure of the grading industry.

We draw four conclusions from the public record. First, PSA 10 sets the headline price for this card, and that price has moved sharply in ten months. Second, CGC Gem Mint 10 copies trade at a deep discount to PSA 10, and the discount appears to have widened since 2023. Third, the BGS top end barely leaves a public trace, and we treat that absence as a market fact in its own right. Fourth, the label is only part of the price: PSA 10 copies sold across a more than four-fold range during 2026.

The PSA 10 Record Run: From $550,000 to $1,385,274 in Ten Months

The public PSA 10 sales record for this card is short, and every entry in it matters. The chart below sets out the dated sales we could document, from 2022 to this month's ALT result. Two of the entries (May and June 2026) come from PriceCharting's log with no venue named, and we could not open the underlying sale pages.

1st Edition Base Set Charizard, PSA 10: Dated Public Sales (USD)

Three phases stand out. The first is the 2022 high. CGC's guide to the most expensive Charizard cards records a $252,000 PSA 10 at Goldin in January 2022 and a $336,000 PSA 10 at Heritage in March of that year. The same guide lists a $420,000 PWCC sale that month without stating the grade, so we leave it out of the series. The second phase is the correction. A PSA 10 sold at Goldin in May 2024 for $172,026, about 49% below the March 2022 Heritage price, and the guide shows a PSA 10 at $227,999 in November 2024. The third is the run that began in late 2025. Heritage sold a copy for $550,000 on December 12, 2025, a record at the time (Yahoo Sports). Goldin then sold one for $954,808 on February 15, 2026 (CGC), and ALT's October result followed.
